Annual Academic Conference on the Asia Minor Catastrophe

The Hellenic League of America, HLA is proud to announce this year’s annual Academic Conference on the Asia Minor Catastrophe, hosted by the Pontian Greek Society of Chicago, on Saturday November 7th, 2009. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA & Canada, the Hellenic Link-Midwest and the Federation of Hellenic American Organizations ‘Enosis’, will focus on the experiences of Ottoman Hellenes living in Asia Minor, Pontos, and Eastern Thrace during the Hellenic Genocide. A follow-up to last year’s Conference, which addressed several important issues dealing with the struggle for recognition of our Genocide. This year’s panel will be moderated by the Director of the Zoryan Institute of Toronto Canada, Mr. George Shirinian. It will feature such known academics as Dr. Taner Akcam, from Clark University presenting on ‘The Greek Deportations and Massacres of 1913-1914 a Trial Run for the Armenian Genocide’. Also joining the conference will be Dr. Constantine Hatzidimitriou from St. Johns University presenting on ‘Official and Unofficial American Reactions to the Asia Minor ‘Catastrophe’, what the documentary evidence reveals”. Danish Historian and researcher Matthias Bjornlund will present on ‘The persecution of Greeks and Armenians in Smyrna, 1914-16: A special case in the course of the late Ottoman genocides’. From Haverford College, Dr. Alexander Kitroeff will be presenting on ‘The plight of the Greek refugees after the break-up of the Ottoman Empire’. And also from Purdue University Dr. Van Coufoudakis will be presenting on ‘Turkey’s deliberate and systematic violations of International agreements since 1923’.
We, at the Hellenic League of America, HLA would like to encourage all those able to attend the conference to please support the Pontian Greek Society of Chicago in their efforts to help produce the needed academic discussions and published material concerning the Hellenic Genocide. Only united can we as a people find justice and International recognition for the injustice suffered by all our ancestors from Eastern Thrace, Asia Minor and Pontos.

ΑπάντησηΔιαγραφήΗ γενοκτονία των Ποντίων (1916 – 1923) με τα πάνω από 353.000 θύματα, αποτελεί μία μεγάλη γενοκτονία του 20ου αιώνα. Ο όρος γενοκτονία όπως διαμορφώθηκε μετά το τέλος του δευτέρου παγκοσμίου πολέμου, σημαίνει τη μεθοδική εξολόθρευση, ολική ή μερική, μιας εθνικής, φυλετικής ή θρησκευτικής ομάδας και πρόκειται για ένα πρωτογενές έγκλημα, το οποίο δεν έχει συνάρτηση με πολεμικές συγκρούσεις. Ο μερικός ή ολικός αφανισμός μιας εθνικής, φυλετικής ή θρησκευτικής ομάδας εμπίπτει, σύμφωνα προς το άρθρο 1 της ειδικής Σύμβασης, την οποία έχει ψηφίσει η Γενικής Συνέλευση του ΟΗΕ το 1948 στο έγκλημα της γενοκτονίας, διακρινόμενο από τα εγκλήματα πολέμου, αφού «δεν παραβιάζει μόνον τους πολεμικούς κανόνες, αλλά το ίδιο αποτελεί έγκλημα κατά της ανθρωπότητας, εφόσον δεν αναπέμπει σε συγκεκριμένα άτομα ή έθνος, αλλά αφορά ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα». [4] Έτσι η γενοκτονία αποτελεί το βαρύτερο έγκλημα σύμφωνα με το διεθνές δίκαιο, για το οποίο μάλιστα δεν υπάρχει παραγραφή. Αυτός ο οποίος διαπράττει τη γενοκτονία δεν εξοντώνει μια ομάδα για κάτι που έκανε, αλλά για κάτι που είναι, στην περίπτωση των Ελλήνων του Πόντου, επειδή ήταν Έλληνες και Χριστιανοί.
ΑπάντησηΔιαγραφήΗ 19η Μαΐου 1919 ημερομηνία την αποβίβασης του Μουσταφά Κεμάλ στη Σαμψούντα, είναι η αρχή για τη δεύτερη και πιο σκληρή φάση της Ποντιακής Γενοκτονίας. Η τρομοκρατία, τα εργατικά τάγματα, οι εξορίες, η εξάλειψη της Ποντιακής ηγεσίας στην Αμάσεια το 1921, [5]οι πυρπολήσεις των χωριών, οι βιασμοί, οι μαζικές δολοφονίες, ανάγκασαν τους Έλληνες του Πόντου να εγκαταλείψουν τις προαιώνιες εστίες τους και να μετοικήσουν μετά από εξοντωτικές πορείες, στην Ελλάδα, στη ΕΣΣΔ, το Ιράν, στη Συρία, και αλλού (Αυστραλία, ΗΠΑ) ή ως μέσο αυτοάμυνας να αναληφθεί αντιστασιακή δράση εναντίον του οργανωμένου σχεδίου εξόντωσης. Έχει γίνει πλέον σήμερα αντιληπτό ότι τα θύματα της γενοκτονίας θα ήταν πολύ περισσότερα, αν δεν υπήρχε το ποντιακό αντάρτικο. [6]Τον επίλογο της ποντιακής γενοκτονίας αποτελεί ο βίαιος ξεριζωμός των επιζώντων μετά το 1922-1923.

We extend an open invitation to our Hellenic brothers and sisters, to enjoy presentations, open discussion and free debate and eat fine Greek buffet and drink Greek wine, FREE ADMISSION. Topics and speakers will present bold and refreshingly young voices on the terrorism inflicted on our people in Macedonia and across our Hellenic Nation and will revisit the religious, ethnic , and cultural significance of our Nations’ historical memory of ALEXANDER THE GREAT.
